Filament has raised $5m in Series A funding led by Bullpen Capital and including contributions from Verizon Ventures and Samsung Ventures.
Filament とは
Filament は、IoT ハードウェアスタートアップです。では、一体どんな製品を作っているのでしょうか。
Co-founder and CEO Eric Jennings framed Filament as a decentralized IoT software stack that uses the bitcoin blockchain to enable devices to hold unique identities on a public ledger. By creating a smart device directory, he said, Filament’s IoT devices will be able to securely communicate, execute smart contracts and send micro transactions.
Co-founder and CEO の Eric Jennings 氏によると、Filament はブロックチェーンを利用した分散型の IoT ソフトウェアスタック、とのことです。Filament によって、IoT デバイスは安全に通信することが可能になると述べています。
Jennings told CoinDesk:
“Almost all these companies have the same concern – ‘What is my IoT strategy?’ Many of these companies are good at what they build but they don’t have a lot of expertise in mesh networking or blockchains, but they know they need to connect these networks to gain efficiencies or risk going out of business.”
同氏によると、IoT の戦略について多くの企業が問題を抱えているそうです。IoT という新たな市場について検討を迫られている多くの企業は、製品を開発する経験自体はあっても、メッシュネットワークやブロックチェーンについての知識や経験がありません。製品と製品をつなぐ必要性は理解しているものの、その実装方法については頭を抱えているのです。

Filament の製品
Filament は、2種類のハードウェア製品を開発しています。
ひとつは Filament Tap と呼ばれるものです。
Tap into anything, anywhere.
The Filament Tap lets you deploy a secure, all-range wireless network in seconds.
Taps can talk directly to each other at distances of up to 10 miles, and since each Tap has BLE, you can connect to them directly with your phone, tablet, or computer.
Filament Taop は10マイル（約16km）までの距離をカバーし、Tap 同士が通信をします。BLE（Bluetooth Low Energy）にも対応しており、スマートフォン等と接続することが可能です。
もうひとつは、Patch と呼ばれるものです。
Patch into your own hardware.
The Filament Patch adds all-range wireless to your own hardware project.
It’s a certified, surface-mount module with everything you need to build your own Filament network, including dedicated crypto hardware, sub-GHz and BLE radios, and compact chip antennas.
Patch は独自の製品に Filament の通信技術を組み込むためのものです。
